We at Life Legal have communicated to our friends, allies, and supporters the importance of fighting “reproductive freedom” ballot measures in states from coast to coast. These ballot initiatives seek through deceptive language to write unlimited abortion as a “right” into state constitutions, condemning thousands and millions of babies over the coming decades to dismemberment and death in murder-for-hire businesses posing as medical facilities.
We explained our emergency efforts to stop such initiatives in California and Ohio – with disappointing results because of the deceptive language of the amendments that confused even ardent pro-lifers.
And we told you about our better-conceived strategies for this year’s fight against pro-abort ballot measures — strategies that we are mobilizing in Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, and Arizona.
Because these campaigns constitute such a crucial front in the struggle to protect children in the womb, we recognize the need to inform pro-lifers of the latest developments. We’ve profited from the lessons of earlier battles and want all who are with us in our current efforts to profit from this year’s lessons.
As of this writing:
- Pro-abortion measures are confirmed for the 2024 ballot in four states: Colorado, Florida, Maryland, and South Dakota.
- Pro-abortion measures are awaiting official approval of signatures already submitted in Missouri and Nebraska.
- Signatures are still being gathered for pro-abortion measures in Arizona, Arkansas, Montana, and Nevada.
The good news is that attempts to advance pro-abortion ballot measures have failed in four states: Hawaii, Maine, New York, and Minnesota. All of these failures were the result of procedural deficiencies – unfortunately, we will likely see these amendments resurrected in 2026.
In the meantime, we are fighting current “reproductive freedom” amendments, especially in Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, South Dakota, and Arizona.
Defeating ballot initiatives in Arkansas, Missouri, and South Dakota is critical, as those states have enacted robust protections for children in the womb that will be abolished if voters approve the abortion amendments.
As we’ve reported before, pro-aborts have dialed in their messaging to appeal to independent and moderate voters. Their primary talking point is “don’t let the government interfere with your personal decisions.” But abortion is not a personal decision, any more than abusing a child already born is a personal decision. The fundamental role of state government is “to enact laws to coerce its citizenry for the public good.”1 There is no higher public good than protecting the most vulnerable – and there is no group more vulnerable than the one million innocent babies targeted for abortion this year alone.
So, what can you do to help defeat these treacherous abortion amendments?
- Talk to your friends and family members – even those who may not share your pro-life views. If regular churchgoers voted against abortion amendments, they would not pass in most states. Persuading people that all human beings – including children not yet born – have inherent dignity and that abortion is not the solution to an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy requires loving and compassionate one-on-one conversations. We will have resources to help spark these kinds of dialogues on our website and in emails in the coming weeks.
- If you live in a state threatened with an abortion amendment, get involved in local efforts, such Decline to Sign Campaigns in Arizona (here or here), Arkansas, and Nevada. Educate yourself about the implications of the amendments in states where they will appear on the ballot, including Montana and Florida, and volunteer to help defeat amendments in states like South Dakota.
- Register to vote and encourage pro-life friends and family to register as well.
- And of course, PRAY!
- Pray that our efforts to defeat the 2024 abortion amendments will be successful.
- Pray that voters see through the hypocrisy and deception of ads promising “freedom” from government intrusion by creating a right to kill innocent human beings.
- Please pray to the Lord of Truth that the clouds of deception which conceal the horrors of the abortion industry will be swept away!
