Missouri’s Supreme Court will decide today whether an initiative enshrining abortion in the state’s constitution will appear on the November ballot.
A group of Missouri voters sued Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft to remove the abortion amendment from the ballot, arguing that the initiative petition was unlawful in that it did not provide voters with sufficient information about the consequences of the petition.
Specifically, the petition did not state that the abortion amendment would repeal current laws restricting abortion.
On September 6, the Circuit Court ruled that the text of the abortion initiative “failed to identify any sections of existing law or of the constitution which would be repealed by the measure,” and as such is in “blatant violation” of the law.
If it passes, the abortion amendment would abolish Missouri’s existing restriction on abortion except in cases of medical emergency.
This morning, attorneys with the Thomas More Society presented their arguments opposing the abortion amendment before the Missouri Supreme Court.
Please join in praying that the Court will uphold the Circuit Court’s decision and remove the abortion amendment from the ballot. The ruling is expected sometime today.
