Rooted in Prayer and Fasting 

As we observe President’s Day, we are reminded of George Washington’s warning in his First Inaugural Address that “the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained.” Moral courage has always required ordinary citizens willing to stand by those principles. 

This Wednesday, 40 Days for Life begins. 

Many of you will once again take your place in prayer outside abortion facilities. Thank you for your faithfulness and your willingness to stand. 

Time and again, we hear stories of women who chose life because someone was simply there. The simple act of showing up can interrupt the momentum of a decision made under pressure and remind a woman that real support — the kind that protects both her and her child — exists beyond the doors of an abortion facility. 

Forty Days for Life is rooted in prayer and fasting. As Our Lord taught: 

“This kind can only come out through prayer and fasting.” 
— Gospel of Mark 9:29 

What happens outside those doors begins long before we arrive — in prayer and sacrifice.
